Varian's mission is to cure cancer. The company partners with physicians, scientists, researchers, and others around the world to offer patients the most advanced radiotherapy treatments, including 3-D conformal therapy, SmartBeam™ IMRT, Dynamic Targeting™ IGRT and Dynamic Adaptive Radiotherapy DART™.
Varian products include linear accelerators and accessories, plus a broad range of interconnected software tools for managing patient information, treatment planning, verification, delivery, and quality assurance.

Varian is also a premier supplier of tubes and digital detectors for X-ray imaging in medical, scientific, and industrial applications and also supplies X-ray imaging products for cargo screening and industrial inspection.

Varian Medical Systems employs approximately 4,200 people who are located at manufacturing sites in North America and Europe and in its 56 sales and support offices around the world.  In Europe, the company operates manufacturing and engineering centers in Baden (Switzerland), Crawley (England), Haan (Germany), Helsinki (Finland) and Toulouse (France) and has headquarters for Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEA) based in Zug, Switzerland.

Company News
Varian was recently awarded the biggest single order in its history with the announcement that the company had won the much-anticipated tender for 14 linear accelerators at three hospitals in Denmark. Radiotherapy centres in Herlev, Copenhagen and Naestved will receive 14 new Varian linear accelerators, each complete with accessories and software enabling Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), over the next 18 months. Varian’s latest Eclipse™ treatment planning and ARIA™ information management software will be installed at all three sites, providing the three clinics with an integrated network for fast efficient treatments that minimize patient waiting times.

Featured Product
The On-Board Imager makes it possible for clinicians to image and treat on a single machine that rotates around the patient to take X-ray images and deliver treatments from virtually any angle.  Mounted on a Clinac® medical linear accelerator, the OBI device produces high-resolution X-ray images of the tumour and tracks changes in tumour shape, size or position over a multi-week course of treatment. It also enables clinicians to track and adjust for tumour motion caused by the patient’s breathing during treatment sessions.

Prior to the advent of image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), radiation oncologists had to contend with variations in patient positioning and with respiratory motion by treating a relatively large margin of healthy tissue around the tumour.  This increased the risk of complications from the treatment and forced doctors to use lower, less effective doses in their treatments. IGRT enables doctors to minimize the volume of healthy tissue exposed to the treatment beam, giving them the option of using higher doses when the patient needs them.

Varian's On-Board Imager enables real-time radiographic, fluoroscopic and 3D Conebeam CT images to be taken while the patient is on the treatment couch. These images are compared with the diagnostic CT and the software automatically suggests amendments to the patient's position before treatment. These changes are actioned from outside the treatment room, making Varian's On-Board Imager the fastest, most-versatile and most effective IGRT tool available to clinicians.

Product List

(a) Clinac range of linear accelerators: There is more to the price of an accelerator than its initial cost. To deliver real value, Varian’s Clinacs provide the highest dose rates for rapid patient treatment, the highest reliability and stability for lower cost-per-patient treatment, the best service and support for rapid diagnosis and repair and the potential to add features that extend the useful life of equipment.

(b) On-Board Imager: An automated system for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) that enables clinicians to obtain high-resolution X-ray images to pinpoint tumor sites, adjust patient positioning when necessary, and complete a treatment, all within the standard treatment time slot.

(c) ARIA information and image management software: The ARIA Oncology Information System combines all patient records into one powerful solution. An oncology-specific Electronic Medical Record (EMR), ARIA makes all administrative, clinical and financial information readily available to cancer care professionals when and where it is needed. ARIA optimizes oncology processes, linking medica and radiation oncology data in one system.

(d) Eclipse treatment planning software: Eclipse simplifies the complexity of modern radiation therapy planning for all modalities such as 3D conformal, IMRT, electron, proton, and brachytherapy. Advanced processes such as IGRT and dynamic adaptive radiation therapy are supported. The efficiency and cost effectiveness of Eclipse enables the adoption of advanced techniques, providing true security of investment while improving the quality of care.

(e) Brachytherapy products: The combination of the BrachyVision 3D treatment planning system with the VariSource 200 HDR afterloader and GammaMedplus HDR/PDR afterloader establishes Varian as a leader in brachytherapy.

(Others) Trilogy accelerators: Trilogy is the world’s first image-guided radiation therapy system optimized for both conventional and stereotactic approaches to treating cancer. The versatile Trilogy system can be used to deliver 3D conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, IGRT, stereotactic radiosurgery, fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy, and intensity-modulated radiosurgery for cancer and neurosurgical treatment.

Acuity simulators: Acuity combines 2D and 3D imaging into a single system supporting planning, simulation, and verification. From simple to complex and IGRT to brachytherapy, Acuity is the optimal integrated solution
