RadPro Job Title Glossary

Therapy radiographers are part of an oncology team that treat patients who have
cancer. Some cancers are best treated with drugs, some with surgery and others
respond well to precisely targeted doses of radiation. Frequently a combination of
methods is used to complement each other.
Using ionising radiation such as high-energy x-rays, the radiographer delivers
accurate doses of radiation to the tumour, whilst minimising the amount of exposure
to surrounding healthy tissue.

A therapeutic radiographer is usually involved in every aspect of the treatment,
including pre-treatment preparation, planning, the treatment itself and the review or
follow-up stages

Assistant therapeutic radiographers assist the therapy radiographer in the delivery
and planning of radiotherapy treatment. In Ireland a theraputic radiographer is called a Radiation Therapist.

Note: More information on Advanced Practitioners and Consultant Radiographers will be
added when available.
