Radiotherapy helps halve prostate cancer deaths: Lancet
Radiotherapy should "urgently" be added to the standard treatment for men with high risk prostate cancer, a charity has said, after a study showed it could almost halve deaths from the disease.
The study by British and Canadian researchers, published today (THUR) in The Lancet and part funded by the UK Medical Research Council, found adding radiotherapy to standard hormonal treatment cut deaths from locally advanced prostate cancer by 43 per cent over six years.
Locally advanced prostate cancer is that which has spread just outside the prostate gland, but not to other parts of the body.

Mother gives birth after cancer treatment under lead shield
A cancer patient is believed to have made medical history in Britain by giving birth to a healthy baby boy just hours after receiving a course of radiotherapy under the protection of a 1.5-tonne lead guard.RayPilot® installed at the Aarhus University Hospital
Micropos have installed RayPilot®, an electromagnetic tumor tracking system for increased precision in radiotherapy of prostate cancer, at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. Micropos and Aarhus University Hospital has signed an agreement where RayPilot® should be used clinically and in which the hospital buys RayPilot® consumable from Micropos.
Aarhus University Hospital and Micropos already has a research collaboration on future RayPilot® applications e.g. controlling the movements of the beam on a linear accelerator from the world's largest manufacturer Varian, in order to follow an imaginary organ inside the body. Doctors at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust better visualize moving lung tumors with latest tools for image-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
RayPilot® transmitter granted European design patent
Micropos RayPilot® is an electromagnetic tumor tracking system for increased precision in radiotherapy of prostate cancer.
The system is now in clinical use at university hospitals in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. In addition, research collaboration is ongoing with Aarhus University Hospital on future uses of the system, among other things to control the beam so that it follows the target / tumor throughout the treatment and for the simultaneous and continuous measurement of the dose into the tumor in order to assure that the adequate dose is delivered according to the plan.
Micropos has continuously worked with various types of intellectual property protection for the product and currently holds several patents and trademark rights. Now another European design patent has been granted the RayPilot® transmitter, which is a consumable item in the RayPilot® system.
Design protection gives Micropos exclusive design and prevent others from exploiting it. This means that no one may manufacture, sell, import or hire a product whose appearance does not give a different overall impression as compared to the design of RayPilot® transmitters.
