Radiotherapy Equipment Listing:

The Radiotherapy Department is currently equipped with two Varian Clinacs, both with MLC and Portal Vision, Varian Ximatron Sim-CT, Adac Pinnacle 3D Treatment Planning System and fully equipped mould room and workshop. There is easy access to CT and MRI for planning purposes. 3D conformal planning is standard and MRI fusion is undergoing development. We are fully networked with Varis Vision and make full use of digital imaging, MLC and PI throughout the department.   In May 2005 the department introduced I-125 permanent seed implant brachytherapy for prostates.

NeuroRadiosurgery is performed using the Gamma Knife allowing precise treatment of small brain malignancies, AVMs and some cranial functional disorders. The Gamma Knife projects up to 201 radiation beams onto a very small volume with great precision, allowing tumours in deep seated areas of the brain to be treated with minimal risk of complications and damage to healthy tissue. The Cromwell Gamma Knife was the first of its kind in London and the centre is an approved international training site for Gamma Knife surgery.

During 2005 and 2006 the Department will be undergoing complete refurbishment and upgrading its treatment facilities with 2 Tomotherapy-Hi Art Systems.  The Tomotherapy System represents a revolutionary advancement in radiation therapy and will be the first of its kind in the UK. It's accuracy and therefore ability to conform to tumour volumes will result in greater tumour control and minimal side effects. This exciting change will bring enormous opportunity for individual staff members to continue to develop themselves, their department and their profession.

Equipment Update
In May 2006 the Cromwell Hospital started treating patients on the UK’s first TomoTherapy Hi-ART System  (see below).  This system integrates treatment planning, IMRT and IGRT.

TomoTherapy is the helical delivery of IMRT using a 6MV linear accelerator mounted on a slip ring gantry. This continually rotates whilst the treatment couch moves through the gantry. The MVCT facility allows the radiographers to verify the position and treatment volume on a daily basis making adjustments as appropriate. To date many different anatomical sites have been treated including; prostate, glioma, nasopharynx, lung, GI tract, orbit and re-treats to spinal metastasis.

For further information visit www.tomotherapy.com.

A second TomoTherapy system is currently being installed and will be clinical in May 2007. A new Gulmay unit has also been installed for superficial treatments.

The total refurbishment of the Department is nearing completion and includes upgrades to the immobilisation room, a new anaesthetics recovery room to enable treatment of paediatrics, a patient quiet room and refurbished waiting area.

Radiographers regularly rotate through the Gamma Knife Unit. This has recently been upgraded to the Gamma Knife Perflexion Model. The new model will broaden the scope of treatment areas to include the neck region.

To enhance the Hospitals cancer facilities, a Phillips Gemini PET-CT scanner, the world’s first open PET-CT has recently been installed. The importance of PET in the management of cancer is increasing and will be used for the diagnosis and staging of many cancers as well as radiotherapy treatment planning.

Cromwell Hospital offers a variety of complimentary therapies for Cancer patients including the Cancer Recovery Programme which is committed to improving the quality of life for cancer patients during and after treatment through specialist rehabilitation and recovery support.

In September 2006 the Radiotherapy & Medical Physics Departments successfully underwent a 3-day audit for renewal of their ISO9001: 2000 certificate. The Hospital is also involved in Investors in People and has recently launched the ‘Health Creation in Business’ programme.

The Cromwell Hospital's oncology treatment facilities are exceptional and are the most comprehensive of any independent hospital in the UK.

Medical Expertise

A team of over 60 Consultants at the Centre delivers all aspects of oncological treatment; radiotherapy, chemotherapy, oncological surgery, palliative care and counselling. The team is supported by specialist medical officers (RMO's), oncology and breast care trained nursing staff.

Diagnosis and Screening

The Hospital has an exceptional range of diagnostic scanners including 2 MRIs and a CT scanner. The Hospital's state of the art Gamma Camera with PET (positron emission tomography) scanning capability enables some cancers to be detected at an earlier stage than conventional imaging techniques allow.

The outcome of treatment for many cancers is often improved when treatment is commenced at an early stage.

Cromwell Hospital offers a range of health screening services designed for the early detection of cancers.
