Services offered

• Information and support for patients and carers by qualified staff regarding all aspects of treatment through to follow up.

• Radiotherapists (Radiographers) are responsible for patient care during radiotherapy treatment courses, offering support, technical expertise and clinical information.

• Radiotherapists participate in role development issues and currently carry out portal image viewing and on treatment reviews, patient consenting and volume delineation. Radiotherapists are the lead group responsible for patient care during daily treatment.

• Clinical meetings are open to staff members to ensure multi-disciplinary approach to patient treatment delivery.

• Clinical governance is given a high profile within the Trust and all staff are participating in activities within this remit.

• Local and National information is available throughout the Centre.

• Support groups are available and meetings are held regularly at different venues across the Country.

• Counselling available.

• Service offered for patients to contact radiographers for further advice following radiotherapy treatment.

• Supportive therapies ranging from aromatherapy, reflexology, shiatsu, massage.

• The centre is looking at site specialist radiographers to work as part of the specialist team.

• A Quality team manage the policies and protocols within the Centre ensuring the working practices are monitored and audited. The treatment techniques are continuously reviewed within the quality system to ensure the best possible practice in accordance with national guidelines and recommendations. The Centre is working towards an ISO 9002 quality programme.

• A research and development Clinical specialist takes a lead role within the centre in looking at evidence based practice and treatment developments.

We have just moved into an additional purpose built extension to our existing building on the Maidstone site.

• A Trainee Consultant Macmillan Therapy Radiographer takes the lead role in the palliative patient pathway.

• There is a co-ordinated approach to research and development by a multi-disciplinary team, evaluating research projects/trials and offering advice.

• Links with Canterbury Christchurch College, South Bank University and the University of Kent are established enabling staff to extend their skills and knowledge base, positively encouraging continual professional development.

• Radiographers wishing to return to the profession are given the opportunity to retrain clinically in this centre.

• Career progression is actively encouraged throughout competence based work books.

• The centre also trains undergraduate students for the BSc Radiography degree and accepting first 2 year course.

• The centre has assistant radiotherapist working within the clinical teams.

• Programme for equipment replacement.

• Staff offered financial support for training courses/study days.
