Limerick

The satellite Radiotherapy department of the Mater Private Hospital opened in October 2005 at Limerick Regional Hospital.

The department is under the auspices of the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin with a computer link between both radiotherapy departments. The presence of highly skilled, dedicated staff is central to the centre’s ethos and are committed to continuous development in all specialties.




The City

Limerick is an area steeped in history and located in the centre of the country. The origin of Limerick city dates back to the 9th century a site settled by the Vikings. Limerick City is known as "City of the Broken Treaty", due to the treaty, which was signed surrendering the city to William. The terms of the treaty included respect for the rights of Catholics were immediately breached. The treaty was signed on the Treaty Stone which can still be seen today. Limerick is a city and county seat of County Limerick in the province of Munster in the midwest of the Ireland. Shannon airport is near and the city is a thriving economic success featuring many multi-national companies. Limerick is benefiting from the Celtic Tiger and much rejuvenation is evident.

Radiotherapy Centre

In the department, there are 2 Varian units, one equipped with OBI and Cone Beam as well as a Siemens CT simulator. We are currently carrying out IGRT and IMRT on the majority of our prostate patients with our prostate patients having fiducial gold markers in place.The Mater Private is the only hospital in Ireland using these fiducial markers for prostate patients. OBI and cone beam are also being used regularly.

Limerick has a large Oncology department, which is situated adjacent to the Radiotherapy department, and there are close links within the hospital providing both modalities as required.

The Limerick department consists of:

2 Varian Treatment units, one OBI and one conventional. ARIA Administration system. Siemens CT Simulator Exomio/Prosoma Virtual Simulator. Physics Planning department using Eclipse Planning System. 11 Radiation therapists
