St. Luke's Hospital, Dublin

St Luke's Hospital has for fifty years played a very special role in the development and delivery of cancer services to patients throughout Ireland. In the past seven years, it has been transformed into a modern technologically advanced centre of excellence in oncology care, research, education and prevention. St Luke's is the primary national centre for radiotherapy treatment in Ireland. It has recently undergone a £30m refurbishment programme and now provides state of the art treatment in this field. Services are provided to over 4,500 patients annually. The rising number of radiotherapy treatments (80,000 in 2005) reflects both the demand on the service and the increased complexity of the treatment.

With a complement of 179 beds, the Hospital has four in-patient wards, a busy day unit and a five-day unit (Oakland Lodge), which facilitates independent patients receiving treatment. St. Luke’s is renowned for its highly skilled staff committed to delivering a high standard clinical care and rehabilitation services. Day in day every staff member play’s a role, both formally and informally, in supporting patients and their families.

St. Luke’s cares for and cures cancer patients not only at the hospital itself, but also through the establishment of cancer care programmes throughout Ireland. In addition to the St. Luke’s clinics around the country, St. Luke’s has strong links with all the Dublin academic teaching hospitals (The Beaumont, St Vincent’s, The Mater, and AMNCH
